Join us as we welcome Scott Fisk, chair of the Dept. of Art and Design at Samford University, to the library to discuss the history and art of letterpress bookmaking.
Society often forgets the importance of books and their impact on us all. This discussion will explore the rich and elegant history of book arts. The talk will focus on how developments in printing and books have served to better society as a whole. Participants will witness first hand the process of letterpress printmaking with a miniaturized printing press made for traveling salesmen in the late 1800s. Other materials such as antique books, broadsides and wood type will help demonstrate the beauty, form and function of early book making. Examples will include beautiful hand crafted books and broadsides by Alabama printers.
Scott Fisk is an accomplished and versatile designer, artist, and professor, specializing in graphic design. Presently, he serves as chair of the Department of Art and Design at Samford University. Fisk has garnered international recognition for his creative prowess, as evidenced by his extensive participation in esteemed, peer-reviewed exhibitions worldwide. His wide-ranging interests encompass various facets of design, including typography, publishing, photography, motion graphics, and user experience design. Fisk possesses a keen fascination with books, letterpress, ephemera, and traditional printing techniques, which adds a captivating dimension to his work.
