Dr. Lauren Bairnsfather, who is a Holocaust historian and the CEO of the Anne Frank Center, will be joining us to speak about the legacy of the Holocaust and especially the legacy of Anne Frank.
Join the Alabama Holocaust Education Center for a timely and insightful program on the uses and misuses of Holocaust memory.
Dr. Lauren Bairnsfather, Holocaust historian and CEO of the Anne Frank Center, will discuss the ways in which Holocaust memory is frequently distorted, contested, and trivialized to serve a variety of social and political ends. In the eighty years since the end of the Holocaust, images of the Holocaust have been distorted or watered down in popular media, Holocaust victims have frequently been compared to victims of other atrocities in a contest to determine who suffered the most, and even the term “Holocaust” itself has lost its specificity, as it has been used to describe a variety of atrocities. Dr. Bairnsfather will explore how these instances of trivializing, distorting, or universalizing the history of the Holocaust undermine the integrity of Holocaust memory. Finally, she will discuss how we can all conscientiously use the history, lessons, and memory of the Holocaust to create a more just and compassionate world. This event is free, but registration is required.
