This history series with Niki Sepsas tells the remarkable story of American Independence celebrating our 250th anniversary. Provided through a grant from America 250 Alabama.
The practice of slavery existed during the time that the Founding Fathers created the United States from what were the 13 original British colonies in North America. After independence, the delegates to the 1787 Constitutional Convention reached what would become known as the “Three-Fifths Compromise” where three out of every five slaves were counted when determining a state's total population for legislative representation and taxation. This program outlines how that decision would lead to a divided nation and the catastrophic war that tore the United States apart 80 years after it was founded.
This presentation is supported by a grant award from America 250 Alabama.
